Heartworm Prevention Information: *Heartworm prevention is allowed only by prescription. *Heartworms, as the name suggests spend their whole lives inside the right side of the dog's heart and the huge blood vessels that connect the heart and lungs. *Dogs get heartworms by mosquitoes that carry it and it only takes one bite from one mosquitoes to get it. *Best systems for ensuring prevention are decreasing exposure to mosquitoes, using preventatives, and giving regular heartworm tests. *Preventatives should not be used for treating heartworm disease. *If left untreated, heartworms are fatal. However, if treated, it is very expensive, and there is no guarantee the dog will live, and the treatment is dangerous because as the adult heartworms die, there is a chance that they could block the heart and respiratory system (and the side effects the adulticides can cause), so it is easier to prevent.
Flea and Tick Prevention: *Ticks carry many diseases, like lime disease. Fleas may spread tularemia and plague. All of these diseases are hazardous to humans. *In dogs fleas generally go toward their rump-you can tell if your dog has fleas by looking at the dog's skin underneath a light, for flea dirt, which is reddish brown little spots. *The environment needs to be treated as well as the pet, because the fleas stay alive longer in bedding, carpet, or carpet, than on your pet. *If a dog shallows a flea, it will get tape worms, which look like grains of white rice in their feces, to treat this it costs more than to just buy flea and tick prevention each month. *Flea collars, may only kill fleas and ticks around the neck area and may cause skin irritations. However, some may be good, so ask for advice from your vet. *Fleas cause skin irritations for some dogs and some will will chew at their skin, and the result may be unsightly hair loss. *If the dog is in the house, the fleas will also bite the people who live in the house and may cause rashes. *See your vet to determine the right flea and tick prevention for your pet. . |
